The journey has been long, hasn't it - from the day that you guys first saw the Epicus and set piece scores, through the days of intensive practicing, to the band exchange...

... and now this. The big day has come.

15 minutes. Everything will pass in that 15-minute-long blink of an eye. Soon you will be stepping off the stage wondering "What the hell just happened?" Would you be able to look back and safely say that you have done your best?

I want to see you guys smile with the knowledge that you've given it your very best, regardless of whatever the results may be.

XINHUI'S CONCERT PROMOS!

Hey all! Forgive me for my abuse of the klarinutz blog, but I'm here to promote my concerts. I'd gladly demand that the Sparkswinds concert be made mandatory for all of you to attend, especially since we're playing your SYF piece, but I won't be that mean lah. But for a change in sound texture, why not try the my orchestra's chamber ensemble concert. It sounds very different from the band background that we all are raised in, and I think it would be nice exposure for all of you. And ohohohoh there a a number of really fantastic players in the orchestra too! Some are members of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra and others from Philharmonic Winds or Singapore Wind Symphony, and a number of the guys were also from SAF bands. So yea the standard here is pretty high and I believe it'll be a real eye-opener for you guys. Can't always be the frog at the bottom of the well yea? So watch them, and see how far behind you guys are, and then aim to catch up yea?

Oh especially since we're all clarinetists, if you do go for my chamber concert, look out for the only guy in my clarinets section. He's an awesome player! And yea all of us clarinetists came from band backgrounds, so see how far you all have the potential to go. Cheers!

NUSSO CHAMBER CONCERT
Where: University Cultural Centre (NUS), theatre hall
When: 17th January 2009 (Saturday), timing to be confirmed but most likely in the evening

Repertoire:
It's a chamber ensemble (small group) concert and my fellow clarinetists have lined up a clarinet quartet piece CONCERTANTE QUARTET by Arnold Cooke, and CONCERT PIECE NO.2 FOR 2 CLARINETS AND PIANO by Felix Mendelssohn. I'm playing the bass clarinet for the quartet and 1st clarinet for the duet. As for what the other ensemble groups are doing, I don't know yet. But do come and support yea? It's my first time playing bass clarinet and the duet is ~~kind of~~ VERY challenging so it would be nice if you guys could come and support me. Admission is free anyway :D

Before I move on to the next concert, let me first disclaim that I WILL WHIP THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF ANY SPARKSWINDS MEMBER OR GUEST PLAYER (yes that's you Sebby) WHO COMES FOR THE CHAMBER CONCERT WHEN HE/SHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE HAVING THE LAST REHEARSAL WITH MS CHAN FOR SUNDAY'S CONCERT! Smack you arh! You guys had better not gimme any ridiculous bullshit on concert day ok?

Hello beloveds.

Whoa after going back yesterday I've got so many things to say to all of you.

Just in case you didn't know, I'm the crazy talkative one who took you guys for sectionals yesterday. Ahaha I hope you guys are inspired to keep practising now.

I'm going to be 100% honest here and tell you that I've heard real bad things said about our section and I felt really scared for you all when I heard you guys play yesterday. Whatever happened to legacy that your seniors left behind for you all? We gave you guys a real good head start - the clarinet section was historically always the strongest and most independent section around. We never had a need for tutors. We were self-motivated, driven to keep improving.

I personally started off my main-band life with the goal that when I graduate, I must be a very much player than my first direct senior (who also happened to be the SL and Eflat player of that time and she was really intimidating). Well, unlike you guys my batch never had the privilege of having encouraging seniors. Like what I mentioned earlier, I was mortally terrified of that direct senior of mine. With every wrong note and every screeching high note that I played, she would turn around and "tsk" me and say "stop screaming your high notes. You sound horrible." But that only made me more determined to become a better player than she ever was. And I kept working towards it. And now I can safely say that, although I am not as fantastic as I wish I could be, I am satisfied with the level of playing that I have achieved in my 4 years in RV. And I believe that most of the klarinutters of my batch can safely say the same for themselves too.

Right now, we seniors are always encouraging you, and I hope that you guys don't have to endure the same harsh treatment that we went through in our time in RV Klarinutz. Sure, we don't visit often due to our busy schedules, but we are always here if you need a helping hand. And I do hope that you all understand that it's not that you guys can't do it, but whether you guys WANT to do it. I saw this slogan on a shirt that a random girl was wearing once. "It's not about how good you are, but how badly you want it."

Hey nutters. I know you all can do it, just like I proved to you guys during sectionals yesterday. I'm thoroughly amazed at how much you guys have improved from when I began taking sectionals until the time you guys had to go off for drills. What was initially a messy clump of notes actually turned out to sound pretty neat. And I know that it can only get better. Although it's just 2 bars worth of triplets, I'm beginning to see the polished diamond that you lumps of coal can become.

Keep working on it. I've taught you guys the way to practice your stuff. It's tiring yes I know, and honestly I'm not a big fan of such technicalities myself. But it must be done in order to perfect your stuff. And this is YOUR SYF piece guys. If you don't put in the effort for this, what else will you put in your effort for? You can't rely on anyone else to help you improve. Each and every one of you must first push yourselves to improve. Bring home your clarinet and practice whenever you can, and practice smart. Only then can you improve as a player.

And remember. Band is not about individuals. Every band has star players. I will go so far as to say that I am the star player of the alumni band now, but that's not what should be the case. However good certain players are, the band (or the section, on a micro level) is only as strong as its weakest player. So even though you guys must all strive to reach new heights as individual players, you must always remember to help the weaker ones along. If you can already play this set of running notes clearly, teach those who cannot. Drive them; push them. Teach them how you did it, and make sure that they can. And work together as a section towards greater heights.

I hope that it's not too high a calling for you all when I ask that you live, breathe and play as an entire clarinets section when you come for band practices. I don't give a damn about who is BFF with who and who buay song who - these things must be left outside the bandroom door. When you come for band, you no longer are so-and-so (whatever your name is), but you are a clarinetist in RVCB. Leave your personal life outside the band room door please. My batchmates personally had so many problems to deal with in our time, and I'm sure it's the same for everyone else. But when we came to band, we tried our best to not let these problems get in our way.

I want to see you guys feel the song together. It might be tough for the parts of Epicus that don't seem to make much melodic sense, but I believe you guys can do it. Perhaps you guys can take some time off during sectionals and listen to the piece (someone saves it in their handphone and blasts it for everyone to hear). Sit down together and come up with a storyline for the song, or discuss what emotions you feel from each part of the piece. And perhaps it might be good to write it down on your score so that, whenever you play that part, you call up memories of that emotion and channel it into your music. I do it for my own exam pieces too. Tried and tested. Your money back guaranteed.

Remember what I said about what should go through your mind before playing? That includes cueing and jerking as a section too. Contrary to what you think, cueing and jerking doesn't have to be taught unto you. It's a natural thing, as natural as tapping your feet to a familiar tune. Just let go, let loose and enjoy the music that you are playing. You don't have to sit up straight to the extent that your body is so stiff. Yes good posture is important, but relaxing and feeling your music is important too. And just let your body move along naturally to the rhythm and phrasing of the music. What's holding you guys back now, probably, is the thought that "eeyerr if I cue and jerk wrongly that will be so malu man!" Just throw that stupid thought away! I assure you that even if you guys don't cue and jerk together, it still looks great. But cueing and jerking comes naturally with the flow of the music so you guys will come in together as long as you listen to and feel what you're playing. I promise!

Whoa I know this is a really long post, and I've got no idea how many of you will read this. Whoever does, please spread the word. I want everyone in the whole section to read this. I'm sorry for taking up your time, but I hope this really does help. Ultimately, I want you guys to feel good about yourselves when you step off the stage during SYF.

You've only got 15 minutes to make or break it, and a few more months to make sure that the 15 minutes is the best that you can. Once you step on stage there's no turning back. It will pass in the blink of an eye. And I don't want you guys to regret it.

the junior band do jiayou i don't think you can win in numbers this time once the seniors are gone:P so work hard everyone.

xinhui posts such long entries, I shall keep mine short yepp. Well, speaking from experience, its really just a blink of an eye when we turn from sec ones to sec fours, then old dowdy lost contact seniors, and its really heartwarming to see you guys yknow, sorta heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time cos its unbearably nostalgic. Seriously years in band with you guys are the bestest bestest.

Okay maybe it wont be such a short post afterall.
I dont know just how many of you juniors would come and read, or even my batchmates, but I have a confession to make.
I've always felt really guilty that my dm postition has caused me to neglect the section, I couldnt give my absolute all to you guys, like looking after individual sectionmates, both in band and outside of band, extra stuff we could have done for general learning that kinda thing. And looking back, its a do it now for the section, or never get the chance ever again sorta thing. I mean, right now as a departed senior, there's so much less that I can do for you as compared to when I was still your sl. Yeah... so thats something I'd like yall to know, I'm really sorry.

And you know, loving you guys isnt so much about who's in the section, it isnt about individuals and whether you play well or you piss me off or that kinda shit. Its about us, when we work together and create music together and have fun together, endure punishments together, thats when you are the most lovable. Thats something I'd like yall, my dearest juniors, to know, that we are the strongest together, thats why we're the largest section in the band, thats to showcase our combined strength.

I have seriously so much more to say, but I'll come back and say them in person, cos it means that much for me (:

Wahh I feel like I'm meddling in affairs that are none of my business. But I think I've really got to say my piece, so hold them farts in and bear with me as I give my two cents (don't worry it's just two cents, not two dollars) worth.

The seasons follow a fixed cycle, and seniors come, seniors go. But the thing about us klarinutters is that we always take challenges in our stride. Herds of seniors have left our ranks, and juniors have been recruited by the droves. What then, causes us klarinutters to succeed each time round?

It's that never-failing attitude of striving to rise up to whatever challenges that are hurled towards our fragile selves. And year after year, our dear klarinutters grit their teeth and keep going. If we're weak, we get stronger. If we're disunited (which happened before to disasterous results I swear), we buy superglue and glue everyone back together (no I'm joking about the superglue please take it METAPHORICALLY)!

To all the present klarinutters, you guys are no different. In you lives the spirit of the klarinutters, passed down by the ancient ancestors long departed (departed as in graduated and left RVCB lah please). You have high hopes to live up to. I hope this doesn't put excess pressure on you guys, but it would break all of us seniors' hearts if the section were to fall apart right now.

Gambatte! You guys can do it I'm sure.

Oh by the way, just by way of feedback, what do you guys think of seniors coming back to take sectionals? Not saying that anyone will do so for sure lah, just asking first. Because Ms Chan keeps asking us why none of us seniors go back to help our juniors and all of us can only give her the guilty look. But deep in our hearts is this concern that you guys would feel that we're "intruders" and feel uncomfortable while we're around. Trust me we feel uncomfortable too. So yea it's a two-way thing so umm all I can do now is gather feedback so we can work a way round the problem, helping the juniors to improve on one hand, and saving the seniors from the guilty conscience that we experience whenever Ms Chan gives us that look.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated, so that I would know that I didn't sacrifice my precious sleep time for nothing (I swear I'm not getting enough sleep).

ALRIGHT KIDS! You can let the farts out now. I've said my piece.

I just came to try my luck and inference skills for the password. Obviously, I succeeded, or else i wouldn't have been able to blog this post -.-

It's been a while since the sec4s left, but band life still has to go on...
To every klarinut out there, please work hard and keep the klarinut spirit going! Well, i hope the lame spirit, guailan spirit and watever spirit you all can think about is still hanging in the air.

Anyway, for the sec1s, serious band life has just started. Urr, people call it the 黄金时期 or something along the line. What i want to say is that all of you should cherish this time and polish up on your skills. If you meet with any problem, just ask any of the seniors around, they should be willing to help you.. If they don't, I can help you slap them (joking).

Hmm, for the seniors, try your best to guide your juniors along, but still, don't forget to help yourself too!
Ehhem *coughs*, juniors out there, excessive bullying of your snr is not allowed. Don't think the sec4s dunno what you all are doing to ur snrs ahh..

Anw, work hard and bring the section to greater heights! Hmm, scoldings are common, just take them positively. Do not give up so easily. Find every chance to improve, complacency wil just cause you more disappointment in the future.

Most importantly, have a good learning attitude.
Then, wil you realize how much you love band, love klarinutz. These memories will stay with you forever.

Hello all klarinutters!

In case you have no idea who I am, I'm XINHUI from the 02-05 batch, and I'm actually the nutter who started this blog in question. Yea that makes me pretty old now, I guess. But not quite ancient enough to not know my html.

Anyhoo, I've added a few stuff to this stagnant blog (I notice no one posts damnit the mosquitoes are breeding colonies in here!) and, just so you know, they are found under the section headcount, the links, and the birthdays column. I listed down everyone that I didn't see on that list and who I know existed once upon a time, but I didn't quite know where I should stop lest the list goes on and on and on and this blog turns out to be nothing more than a list of the names of has-beens (I can actually remember up to a couple of batches before me, and I can ask around for those older than that) so I finally decided to cut it at my batch... which is a pretty long way back, as you would probably have guessed by now if your math isn't as bad as mine.

Under the links section, well I updated my blog url from xinhwee to xaerenh, just in case you were wondering why it was a dead link. I also added Cynthia's semi-dead blog to the list, a decision justified by the fact that she has most recently exhibited some sporadic musings. For all those who are not in the know, Cynthia Lin Zhao'en aka Turtle Lin is the eflat clarinettist before Wenhui, and one of the SLs for my batch. Which makes her pretty ancient as well.

Ahh all the birthdays... if you were expecting birthday presents from me, then let's pretend I never saw and continue with our blissful ignorant existance, shall we? *whistles nonchalantly* No seriously, I haven't got enough cash on me, and I can not promise that I will be able to deliver the presents anyway once my school term starts. So, to be fair, let's pretend we never saw it shall we?

Alright nonsense aside, I added all the birthdays that I know of (which, given my poor goldfish memory and my unawareness of dates, is very little). As far as I know,

January: Jingxian (3rd); Jeremy (23rd) - both from my batch
April: Jinhui (21st); Cynthia turtle Lin (26th) - both SLs from my batch... what a coincidence

a lil update from me.since it's gonna rot,and everyone's too busy to even really care about the speed of decay.

o wells it's 4 more days for the sec 4s til self-disciplinary liberation.excluding graduation day.not really sure how's prelims for everyone,but i hope none of us did too badly.haha.

our beloved jrs(~~sec~~ yr 3s included)are having their EOY,which i think should be ending by this week.o wells best of luck.hope the ip choo-choo trian don't kill you guys,esp the yr 3s,since you guys are the pioneer batch muahahahaha.

not that being the last batch to take the big fat notorious O's is good la,but our pressure is less^^
and i hope the chalet's plan is nearly done.please start booking or something.i keep having the feeling the chalet would end up not in a chalet,but in tents:/
